HISTORY OF MOUNT GRAVATT EXPLAINED
Mount Gravatt was named by surveyor Robert Dixon in 1840 after George Gravatt who commanded the Moreton Bay penal colony back in 1839. The first school, Mount Gravatt State School, was opened in 1874 and part of the area used to be known locally as “the Terminus”, since Mount Gravatt was the end of the line where the electric trams used to run down Logan Road from the suburb into Brisbane CBD. Following the closure of the tram network, public transport has since been provided by buses by local bus company Mount Gravatt Bus Service.
An important centre for cultural as well as community activities is the Mount Gravatt Showgrounds. The Showgrounds are also the site used for the annual Mount Gravatt Show, which is an agricultural fair held every year.
